Africa is the second-largest continent in the world. It comprises five regions and fifty-seven countries at a size of 30.5 million square kilometres or 11.9 million square miles, taking up 6% of the earth’s surface and is almost 80% the size of the Moon. Africa is home to c.35.4 million (or 17.4%) LGBTQIA+ population and is surrounded by the Antarctic, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It is a continent with six time zones and twenty-eight official languages and over two thousand regional languages and dialects.
Some interesting facts about Africa:
- It is believed that Africa was given the name by the Romans and is named after a local tribe, ‘Afri’, which later formed into Latin as ‘Aphir-ic-a.’
- Africa is the second-largest continent in the world, making up 20% of the world’s land surface
- Africa is the hottest continent on the planet and is home to some of the highest known recorded temperatures
- Africa is one the largest producers of the world’s chocolate, and the majority of gold and diamonds are mined within the continent
- Africa is home to the world’s longest river, the Nile and the largest desert, the Sahara
