Located in Southern Florida in the United States of America, Miami is the second largest city in the state and ninth in the country. Miami is used to refer to the city of Miami as well as the county known as Miami-Dade. The city and its distinctive skyline, with over 300 high-rise buildings, is the third-largest in the USA, and its port is the busiest cruise port in the world. The city of Miami is split into four sections: north, south, west, and downtown. The county is made up of nineteen cities, six towns, and nine villages. The city has 26 neighbours, and sections represent its largest immigrant populations, such as Little Havana and Little Haiti, as well as its major industries, such as the Arts & Entertainment District, Design District and Health District.
Miami occupies an area of 20 square miles or 52 square kilometres and has a population of 442 thousand people. Over 70% of residents are Hispanic or of Latino origins, 14% are white, less than 12% identify as black and over 50% were not born in the USA. A large proportion of the Hispanic population is of Cuban origin. Haitians make up the largest proportion of the Black and Caribbean immigrants that call the city home. Miami has two national parks, the Biscayne National Park and the UNESCO World Heritage site, Everglades National Park. With a 35-mile or 56-kilometre-long coastline and 16 beaches, with the most visited and best known being South Beach, Lummus Park Beach and Haulover Beach, Miami has a lot to offer visitors, whether sunbathing and enjoying the many beaches, taking in the local cultures and cuisines or the parting the night away with the vibrant nightlife.

Some interesting facts you might not know:
- The city of Miami was initially named Chequescha, then Biscayne Bay Country, and it changed to its current name in 1896. Miami is derived from the word Mayaimi, which was the name of the native American tribe that lived within the area during the 17th and 18th Centuries.
- Miami was a mangrove swamp, and the modern city was born due to the railroad extension. Julia Tuttle, a local businesswoman and property owner, negotiated for the railroad to be extended to the city; in return, she offered a hotel and railroad station for free. In 1896, the railroad arrived, and Miami became the first and only major US city founded by a woman who was later given the nickname of the mother of Miami.
- Miami is one of the best-known and most famous cities in Florida; it is a popular tourist destination and is one of the most recognisable city names in the United States of America. Even though it is well-known, it is a common mistake for people to believe that Miami is the state’s capital. The actual state capital city is Tallahassee, and though Miami is ranked second in terms of the most populated cities within the state, the largest is Jacksonville.
- Miami is famous for its iconic beaches; however, did you know that Miami Beach is man-island? Before 1915, the beach was an unnamed barrier island until Carl G. Fisher, an entrepreneur, began dredging sand from the ocean floor to create a grand resort city. The city of Miami Beach was incorporated in 1915. Because it is artificial, the sand has to be replenished over time. In 2017, the city authorities saved a strip of the beach and shoreline by importing sand from the Caribbean for over 11 million US dollars.
- Miami is the cruise capital of the world. The port of Miami is home to some of the world’s largest cruise liners. It acts as a hub for many Caribbean and Latin American destinations. The port sees over 5 million passengers each year, making it one of the most popular cruise destinations and the third-largest port in the United States of America.
- Miami is home to and launched the fifth largest food chain in the world, Burger King. The company was founded in 1953 and was known as Insta-Burger King. After financial difficulties, it was purchased by two Miami businessmen, David Edgerton and James McLamore, who renamed the newly purchased company Burger King. The fast-food giant has long roots in the city; it is where, even today, you can find its headquarters and where the iconic Whopper burger was first introduced to the world. Today, Burger King has over 19,000 restaurants worldwide and has an annual revenue of over 20 billion US dollars.
- Liberty Square, also known as Pork and Beans in Miami, was the first public housing project for African Americans in the Southern United States of America. The apartment complex began construction in 1934 and, upon completion in 1937, provided 753 units during a period where racial segregation of black Americans existed.
- Even though the official language within Miami is English, Spanish is most spoken among its residents. The city has long become home to many immigrants from around the world; however, the largest immigrant groups are Hispanics coming from Cuba, Haiti and Colombia. Miami’s Hispanic population is so significant that Little Havana and the surrounding area are home to the largest Cuban community outside of Cuba, followed by Little Haiti (Ti Ayiti). which is home to the largest group of Haitians outside of Haiti.
- Miami was a famous pirate hangout. Throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries, many pirates would dock at the coastline of modern-day Miami, waiting and preying on ships on the Great Florida Reef, which is close to the city.
- Miami’s long history and association with the sea can be found under its waters. The waters surrounding the city are home to 75 shipwrecks, making it one of the world’s most famous wreck diving destinations. Miami is popular for treasure hunters, scuba divers and snorkelers who explore the stunning barrier reef and underwater shipwrecks.
- Miami is the only city in the United States of America to be bordered by two national parks. The first is the Everglades, a 1.5-million-acre wetlands preserve on the southern tip of the state, and the second is the Biscayne National Park. This 172.9-thousand-acre park is home to coral reefs, islands and a mangrove forest.
- A popular destination from Miami, Key West is home to the Seven Mile Bridge. The bridge is the longest in Florida and was considered one of the longest when it opened in 1982. The bridge, a section of the US Highway Route One that was originally part of the Overseas Highway, connects Knights Key (in the Middle Keys) to Little Duck Key (in the Lower Keys). The highway runs a total length of 6.8 miles or 10.9 kilometres, has a width of 38 feet or 12 meters, offers stunning ocean views and connects the islands within Key West.
Miami is located in the southeastern state of Florida in Miami-Dade County within the United States of America. Many flights from Europe will usually take an average of ten and a half hours, offering many direct flights all over the continent. It will typically take less than 3 hours from other major cities in North America, and many direct and indirect routes are available. .
