An individual who identifies as Same-Gender Loving (or SGL) can be defined as female or male, within the spectrum or as non-binary. African Americans, those from the Black community and people of colour created the term as they wanted a more inclusive identity, not based on words and symbols from people of European descent. Same-Gender Loving individuals would typically identify as Lesbian or Gay within more traditional definitions. Caucasians who feel unable to identify with conventional definitions of sexual orientations or identifiers prefer identifying as SGL as there are fewer perceptions than other LGBTQIA+ group terms

- Black and brown were added to the LGBTQIA+ rainbow flag to ensure people of colour felt included and represented in the community
